About PCIT

Who is PCIT for?

PCIT is designed for young children between the ages of 2 and 6 1/2 years old. It is an evidenced based treatment that is proven to be successful with children experiencing:

  • oppositional/defiant behaviors
  • disruptive behaviors
  • adjustment problems ( including adoption, divorce or other changes)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • frequent tantrums

It also helps children impacted by:

  • Change (relocation, separation of parents)
  • Developmental delays
  • Abuse/neglect
  • Adoption
  • Anxiety

  Goals of PCIT:

  • Improve your relationship with your child
  • Improve your child’s minding and listening
  • Increase your child’s ability to manage frustration/anger
  • Increase your child’s positive social skills
  • Improve attention skills
  • Improve self esteem

What does treatment look like?

  • Parent and Child are together during sessions
  • Sessions take place weekly for about 12 weeks
  • Therapist coaches parents, helping them learn and practice behavior management skills through a ‘bug in the ear’ device to shape behaviors ‘in the moment’
  • Parents practice skills daily at home
  • Two phases of treatment: First  phase focuses on improving the parent-child  relationship.  Second phase teaches effective discipline skills.
